Rape suspect apprehended

Information from the community and the vigilance of George SAPS led to the arrest of a rape suspect on Friday 8 September 2017 around midnight. He was recognized from an identity kit issued by police earlier this month.

The 37 year old suspect was spotted hanging around at an accident scene near the same filling station from where he accompanied the victim on 29 August 2017. It is alleged that he later raped the victim and stole her red and white VW Golf.

A vigilant member of the public recognised the suspect from the circulated ID-Kit and alerted a member of the George SAPS Visible policing who executed the arrest. The suspect was transferred to Da Gamaskop Police holding cells in Mossel Bay where he remains in custody.

The suspect will be subjected to an ID-Parade. Further investigation by the investigating officer led to the find of the victim’s VW Golf that was found abandoned near Garies and handed in for safekeeping at the Springbok police station. The suspect had been positively linked to the theft of the vehicle. Besides the theft of the vehicle he faces charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, four counts of rape, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and theft of a motor vehicle.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrates Court on Monday 11 September 2017.
Bail will be objected to ensure further investigation and to prevent the reoccurrence of such horrific criminal conduct. This will also ensure sufficient time to check his whereabouts prior to the incident and also to verify his address which he alleged is somewhere in Steinkopf in the Northern Cape.
