Parents urged to safeguard children

Police urged parents to safeguard their children at all times. This after two girls aged 5 and 6 respectively were abducted and assaulted in Port Elizabeth on 20 September 2017.

It is alleged that the two girls were playing in the street when they disappeared. When the girls failed to return home, members of the community assisted the parents in a search for the missing toddlers.

Police were contacted and a massive search operation involving helicopters and the K9 unit was launched.

Shortly after midnight the six year old girl was wound with several stab wounds to her head. She was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The girl was able to give police enough information regarding the abduction in order to narrow the search area. The investigation led police to the shack where the five year old girl was found at approximately 5am on Thursday 21 September 2017 in the bed of the suspect. She had no visible injuries and was taken to hospital as precaution.

The owner of the shack, a 49 year old man was arrested and will appear in court on charges of assault, attempted murder, abduction and possibly rape, depending on the outcome of a medical examination.

It is reported that the suspect was one of the community members who assisted in the search for the missing girls.

Both victims and their patents are receiving trauma counseling.
