Fourteen active fires in The Garden Route

According to the Eden District Municipality, on Saturday 4 November 2017, 14 active fires are currently being attended to by fire-fighters.

In a statement on released on Saturday 4 November 2017, the Eden District Municipality said that their Joint Operations Centre (JOC) was still activated, and a follow-up JOC meeting will be convened on Sunday.

From Friday until Saturday the Herbertsdale, Molen River, one spot in De Vlugt and Waboomskraal wildfires have been extinguished.

“Two other fires were reported overnight in the Sebrafontein and Anys Mountain areas.”

“Currently, the Dubbelberg area is of greatest concern and receives priority because the fire jumped into the pine plantation, most of the firefighters and resources are deployed here.”

“Pine trees, which are not indigenous, cause a higher fuel build-up and are less damp than indigenous forests, and lead to more vigorous and intense fires.”

“A Forward Control Point (FCP) has been established at the Buffelsnek Plantation to coordinate firefighting activities at the Dubbelberg fire”.

“Firefighters currently deployed in the district include six from Eden District Municipality, 25 from Mountain to Ocean (MTO), 166 from Working On Fire, 14 from Nature and approximately 20 from PG Bison.”

Included in the District Municipality Joint Operations Centre Eden are members of the District Municipality, SANParks, Working On Fire, Cape Nature, MTO and PG Bison.
