Waddle, waddle, splash and swim.

On Saturday 11 November 2017,a large number of people gathered on Lookout Beach in Plettenberg Bay to witness the release 10 endangered African penguins by Nature’s Valley Trust after a successful rehabilitation program at Tenikwa Wildlife Centre. The event was made possible with the help of Birdlife South Africa, Birdlife Plettenberg Bay and WESSA while Rozanne Fleet and Michael Bridgeford took some pictures. The ten penguins were all rescued between Nature’s Valley and Goukama in recent months. Some were moulting. Most of the penguins stood almost no chance of survival on their own as a number of then were diagnosed with avian malaria, while others suffered from some had babesia, a form of tick bite fever.

After an extensive rehabilitation program at Tenikwa Wildlife Centre, resident vet, Dr. Brendan Tindall from Robberg Veterinary Clinic gave the “all clear” for release after they were all given a full bill of health on 10 November. The penguins all have microchips for future identification.

It is expected that the penguins will remain in the Plettenberg Bay area for quite some time. Nine of the ten released penguins are juveniles and will spend between 3 and 4 years at sea before returning to the colony they originate from which presumably is in Port Elizabeth.
