Scenic route open again

The Swartberg Pass is re-opening for traffic on 17 November 2017 after floods in April caused the closure of the pass, negatively impacting the business and the tourism sector in Prince Albert.

The pass, built between 1881 and 1888 by master road builder Thomas Bain has been described as one of the most scenic routes in Southern Africa.

The pass runs between Oudtshoorn in the south and Prince Albert in the north, and rises 1000m in a 12 km winding gravel road, offering breathtaking views around every bend, making it one of the top tourism attractions in the area.

In April 2017, floodwaters washed away large parts of the road and the road had to be closed for safety reasons. It was announced earlier in November that the repairs of the pass have progressed to such a point that the road can be re-opened for traffic on 17 November, bringing much relief to the tourism and business sector of Prince Albert.

For the past month the road was open for traffic on weekends only.
