Paraglider dies from massive heart attack

A 59 year old man died mid-air while paragliding in Wilderness on Sunday 19 November 2017. It was confirmed that the victim, (name removed as per request from family member), died as a result of a heart attack. We received the following statement:

“The South African Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SAHPA) extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, who passed away mid flight while paragliding from The Map of Africa in Wilderness on Sunday, 19 November 2017. He was participating in paragliding training at arguably one of the most scenic sites in the country the time.

The victim had completed 30 flights under the guidance of a registered instructor, and was flying in the company of fellow students, instructors and visiting pilots on what was reported to be a perfect day for flying. He was five flights short of his Basic Paragliding Licence.

Witnesses reported: “The deceased was seen slumped in uncontrolled flight, gently impacting bushes at the side of a house. Other pilots performed CPR before being relieved by a paramedic, who had been called to the scene along with other emergency personnel.” The cause of death has been confirmed by the coroner as an instant heart attack.
