Local beauty becomes Miss Universe.

Local beauty, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from Sedgefield, walked away with the title of Miss Universe at a glamour event held in Las Vegas on Sunday 26 November 2017.

Nel-Peters was crowned as Miss South Africa earlier this year, giving her automatic entry to the Miss Universe pageant where she competed against 91 contestants from across the globe.

This is only the second time in history that a South African walked away with the Miss Universe crown, the first South African Miss Universe was Margaret Gardiner, crowned on 24 July 1978 at the Centro de Convenciones de Acapulco in Acapulco, Mexico.

Here is how Demi's life will change:

She will relinquish her crown as Miss South Africa in order to perform her duties as Miss Universe. The new Miss South Africa will be the first princess, Adé van Heerden from Cape Town. Adé made it the top ten in the Miss World pageant held in Sanya, China.

Demi-Leigh will be whisked away to New York, where she will be living in a luxury apartment for the next year while performing her duties as Miss Universe.

The newly crowned Miss Universe will also be earning a salary for performing her duties over the next twelve months.
