Major volcanic erruption imminent

More than one hundred thousand people have been ordered to evacuate from the popular tourism destination, Bali, as a volcanic eruption from Mount Agung is said to be‘imminent’.

Authorities ordered the closure the Bali International Airport for all traffic on Monday 27 November 2017, and implemented plans for the immediate evacuation of the area, as the plumes of ash and smoke from Mount Agung rises several kilometers up in the air. Flights to and from the nearby Lombok Airport are taking a detour to avoid the cloud of ash from Mount Agung.

The closure of the Bali airport is affecting flights in the region as plane scheduled for flights on other routes are now stuck on the tarmac at Bali airport.

Ferry crossing points have been advised to prepare for a massive increase as at least 100 buses have been commissioned to help the thousands of stranded tourist. Tourists are now able to make use of ferries to travel to nearby Java from where they are able to travel via land to the nearest airports.

While lava is welling up in the volcanic crater, a number of explosions over the past 24 hours could be heard up to 12 km from Mount Agung.

Mount Agung has been dormant since 1963 when an eruption caused the death of 1100 people.

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Bali is Indonesia's favorite tourist destination, known for its natural attractions, perfect climate and relaxed atmosphere.

Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia alone has nearly 130 active volcanoes, making it the country with the biggest volcano threat to life.
