Boys rescued from surf in Plettenberd Bay.

Quick thinking by a 6 year old boy was instrumental in saving the lives of 3 youths at Hobie Beach in Plettenberg Bay on 3 December 2017.

Just before midday on Sunday 3 December 2017, Cameron Badenhorst, a 6 year old local boy, noticed a drowning in progress in the surf in front of the lifeguard tower at Hobie Beach in Plettenberg Bay.

Without hesitation, Cameron ran to the nearby NSRI station to alert the crew of what was happening. The NSRI dispatched rescue swimmers to the scene.

On arrival at the scene, the NSRI personnel found members of the public and a lifeguard assisting 3 children out of the water, and assisted in getting the casualties to the beach. Once on dry land the three victims, aged between 9 and 11, were treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital by means of a Med-Life ambulance in a stable condition. Once in hospital, the three boys were treated for symptoms of non-fatal drowning. They are expected to make a full recovery.

The children were swept out to sea by rip currents after incoming waves prevented them from being able to stand in the surf.

Cameron's quick reaction in alerting the NSRI, as well as the members of the public that assisted, are commended for their actions.
