Denneoord Aerial Fire Base successfully launched

On 6 December 2017, The Denneoord Aerial Fire Base and Southern Cape Summer Fire Season was successfully launched during an event held at the newly established Fire Base.

All relevant stakeholders including George Municipality, Southern Cape Fire Protection Services, Kishugu, Working on Fire (WoF) and Eden District Municipality attended and were treated to an aerial demonstration by the fixed wing bomber and chopper. Working on Fire teams provided singing, drilling and dancing as entertainment.

Executive Mayor for George, Melvin Naik thanked and commended the Working of Fire teams for their display and commitment to their duties.

A total of five fixed wing aircraft and one helicopter will be stationed at the base for the Southern Cape fire season which runs from December 2017 until April 2018, and will be manned by a team from WoF. Funding for the project was made possible by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Besides the one kilometer runway and helipad, the base consists of a fire base office, taxiways, hangars and a water refilling station.
