Rescue at Leentjies Klip

On Sunday 21 January 2018, NSRI Wilderness received reports of a drowning in progress in the ocean off Leentjies Klip beach in Wilderness. The call came from a woman who watched her husband being pulled into the water by rip currents.

NSRI Wilderness crew had just finished a routine training exercise when the call was received shortly after 11h30am. Rescue swimmer Andrew Burrell and crew member Lucia Pinto responded by quad bike from the sea rescue station to the scene, approximately 2km west of the sea rescue station.

Two male members of public had already entered water with a pink rescue floatation buoy in an attempt to rescue the victim, a 65 year old male from Cape Town.

On arrival at the scene the NSRI rescue swimmer, Andrew launched into the surf and reached the casualty near back line and managed to bring the victim to dry land where Lucia was waiting. Andrew then swam back out to sea to assist the two members of the public who used the pink flotation buoy, to reach the shore.

George Fire and Rescue, Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services as well as Eden911 responded to the scene.

The casualty was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms and after being assessed by Fire Department medics as well as ER24 paramedics, he was taken to hospital by ER24 ambulance in a stable condition for further treatment. It is expected that the victim will make a full recovery.

NSRI commended the response from public for the multiple calls received from eye witnesses.
