A smelly affair

The decomposing carcass of a whale that washed up on the beach at Kleinkrantz near Wilderness is causing a stir on social media due to the smell coming from the dead mammal. According to a spokesperson from SANParks, the carcass will be removed on Wednesday 14 February 2018.

The whale described as an adult Bryde's Whale, washed up on the beach at Kleinkrantz on 9 February 2018.

Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team volunteers were called to scene where they took measurements and pictures for further analysis.

The animal was seen floating in the water off the coast in the days prior to it washing up on the beach. The animal died at least a week before, probably from old age or natural causes according to a marine biologist.

The advanced stage of decomposition of the whale made it extremely difficult for scientists to obtain samples for analysis purposes.

We spoke to Nandi Mgwadlamba from SANParks about the removal of the carcass. Due to the advanced stage of decomposition, the removal of the animal is not as easy as one would think, and can only be done if the tidal conditions allow it to be done.

According to Mgwadlamba, the tidal conditions will be perfect and all preparations by SANParks rangers are in place for the removal of the carcass.

In the mean time, the public is urged to stay away from the carcass, and prevent domestic animals like dog from approaching the carcass, which does pose a health hazard.
