Six in court after foiled Knysna robbery

SIX suspects appeared in court in Knysna this week after police foiled a planned cash-in-transit robbery on a van delivering cash to ATM’s in the Knysna CBD last Friday.

The suspects, from the Eastern Cape, were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation involving various SAPS units, including the DCPI (Hawks’ Organised Crime Unit based in George), Crime Intelligence, National Task Force and local police working closely together with the cash-in-transit company that was believed to be a target.
Based on intelligence gathered for some time, police surrounded two vehicles in the main street and St George’s Street and also chased down a Chevrolet Optra that was travelling in the direction of George. After the occupants of this vehicle were questioned, they were released as they could not be positively linked to the foiled cash in transit heist.
Subsequentlyan older model Mercedes Benz and a Ford Meteor were searched and six suspects were apprehended and taken to the Knysna Police Station where they were charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Cash In Transit Heist.
The two vehicles and cell phones belonging to the accused were confiscated as evidence. Preliminary investigation showed that the Ford Meteor was reported stolen at the Mount Road Policing Station in Port-Elizabethearlier last month.
The investigation is being done by the DPCI (HAWKS’) office based in George, who will also investigate whether the suspects could be linked to other cash in transit heists in the country.
