Tourist rescued in Wilderness

On Sunday 25 February 2018, rescue services rushed to the Brown Hooded King Fisher Trail in Wilderness where a tourist fell from a cliff, sustaining serious injuries.

A rescue operation involving Eden911, Mountain Rescue, and Fire And Rescue, was launched and carried on till the early hours of Monday morning, 26 February 2018.

At approximately 5am on Monday, rescue workers managed to reach the casualty at the bottom of a cliff and slowly started making their way to safety. The victim's brother who accompanied him on the hike was only slightly injured.

Rescue workers finally reached the awaiting ambulance shortly before 7am on Monday morning. The victim was rushed to a hospital in George in a serious but stable condition.

SANParks released the following statement:

SANParks rangers who were on high alert following last week’s mugging incident were approached by other hikers who witnessed the incident. They rushed to the scene.

Ranger in Wilderness, Jonathan Britton has confirmed that two French visitors were out on the Brown hooded Kingfisher trail when they went off the trail when they reached the waterfall.

The area off the trail where they had walked was slippery due to the previous evening’s rainfall. One of the men slipped and fell almost 30 meters into the waterfall.’ Rangers alerted emergency services partners including Mountain Rescue and volunteers from Plettenberg Bay who rushed to the scene.

The operation was tricky and it took the whole night to rescue the casualty. Approximately 7am on Monday 26 February 2018, he was pulled up and transported to the nearest hospital.
