The Knysna Fires Commemoration

A year later after the devastating Knysna Fires, Knysna Municipality will reflect back on this tragedy by hosting a Sculpture Unveiling commemoration ceremony on Thursday, 7 June and will support the Garden Route Environmental Restoration Seminar to be held on 6 and 7 June 2018.

Knysna Executive Mayor, Eleanore Bouw-Spies will unveil a Sculpture in front of the Knysna Municipal Finance Building, Queen Street, Knysna.

Bouw-Spies said, “The ceremony will be an elegant, simple and stately unveiling and commemoration aimed at honouring and paying tribute towards those that lost their lives, homes, possessions and all those who offered their assistance during and after the devastating fires that raged through Greater Knysna.”

The mayor explained the design of the Sculpture. “I am delighted to announce that the Sculpture is a local design generously supplied by a collaboration of Rodney Nel Management Services, Mosaic Village and Outdoor Market and Glass roots. A unique statue depicting the Knysna Fires 2017 and the rebuilding of Greater Knysna. This is not just a statue. It is the essence of perseverance, hope, allegiance and commitment.

“I encouraged all residents of Greater Knysna to attend this ceremony in commemoration of what our town has gone through. The short programme scheduled to kick off at 3 pm on Thursday, includes, a parade, South African national anthem by Shaza Greeff, unveiling and closure song.”

The Knysna Municipality will also be supporting the Garden Route Environmental Restoration Seminar which will be held on 6 and 7 June at Brenton on Sea.

The purpose of this conference is to revisit the devastation caused by the fires of June 2017, reflect on the actions taken to address environmental restoration and consider the challenges for avoiding such environmental tragedies in the future.
