Persistent rain brings relief:

At least 3 of the sluice gates of the Clainwilliam dam had to be opened as the dam reached full capacity on Friday 7 September 2018.

Welcome rain is still falling in the catchment area of the Theewaterskloof Dam, the biggest water source for the Cape Metropole.

The Theewaterskloof Dam reached a level of over 50% compared to 26.8% a year ago. Meanwhile the Voëlvlei Dam reached 78% over the weekend, compared to 25% a year ago.

The average level of dams in and around the Cape Metropole reached 68% on 8 September. The same time last year the combined level was 35.1%.

We received the following rainfall figures from readers and followers around the country for the period 7pm on Thursday 6 September ending 7am on Saturday 8 September 2018.

Tsitsikamma received in excess of 200mm with 100mm falling in a 6hour period.

Luterwater Hoek: 216mm
Krakeel: 230mm
Musgund: 170mm.

Excellent rainfall was also recorded in the Nelson Mandela Bay area, where the Krakeel and Krom rivers are flowing very strong, These rivers feed the dams supplying Port Elizabeth and surround with water. More rain is expected, bringing welcome relief to the water scarce area.
