Locals keep Sedgefield Tourism alive

Once the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the Knysna Municipality and Knysna Tourism expired, a decision to shut the doors of the Sedgefield local tourism information office was made. Not deterred, the residents of this coastal village once again showed their mettle by opening their own tourism office, Sedgefield Tourism Information, Arts & Crafts.

“Despite the fact that Sedgefield forms very much part of Greater Knysna, and has so much to offer incoming tourists, the local government decided that they would only keep the Knysna tourism information office doors open, and shut the Sedgefield’s office for good,” explained ex Knysna Tourism Board member and Sedgefielder, Jurgens van der Walt during the official opening of the office on Thursday, 13 September.

He explained that, as with Knysna, Sedgefield relies heavily on the tourism sector and that not having a local office where visitors can pop in to get first-hand information would put the town at a disadvantage. “To be honest, it broke my heart that the young lady manning the desk at the old tourism office was going to lose her first ever job, through no fault of her own. That and the fact that we had just started being recognised as a tourist destination motivated a few of us put our heads together to see how we could ensure that the office remains open.”

Now the young lady can share her vast knowledge of the area and local artists can only use the office as a platform to display their wares. “We have a wealth of talent in our area. Very often this talent remains hidden under a bushel. I believe that giving these artists the opportunity to show-off their talent to the many tourists that visit our village will help them get the recognition they so richly deserve,” said van der Walt.

In closing he added: “This office is run by locals for the locals and I must thank each and every member of the team and the many locals who have thrown their support behind this initiative. Once again the community spirit of Sedgefield shines bright, and we have proved that when the going gets tough the tough gets going! We still cling to the hope that the local government will reconsider their decision and assist in funding the Sedgefield tourism office.”

Sedgefield Tourism Information Arts & Crafts office is situated in the old Sedgefield Information office, 30 Main Road, Sedgefield. It is open Monday to Friday 09:00 – 18:00 and Saturday, 09:00 – 14:00. They can also be reached on 044 343 2007 or by email Office@sedgefieldtourism.info.
