Scores dead in Indonesian tsunami

It is not clear if any South Africans are affected by a tsunami that struck the coastline of Indonesia at 9h30pm on Saturday 22 December 2018, killing at least 168 people.

The tsunami hit the coastline around Sundra Straight without warning following a volcanic eruption of Anak Krakatoa (child of Krakatoa), a volcanic island formed by lava from Krakatoa.

Search and rescue teams are scouring rubble for survivors with 168 people confirmed dead, 745 injured and at least 30 people unaccounted for.

Hundreds of buildings, including hotels, were destroyed by a wall of water which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java.

A video posted on social media shows how the wave crashes into an open-air concert by the pop group 'Seventeen' - hurling band members from the stage and flooding the audience. Sadly the bassist of the band and the tour manager were among the dead.

Anak Krakatoa is a small volcanic island that emerged from the ocean approximately 500 years after the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa which killed 36 000 people.

In 2004 a massive tsunami hit the coastline of northern Sumatra, and 13 more countries, killing an estimated 227 898 people, making it the 10th deadliest natural disaster in history
