Enteroviral Meningitis outbreak

More than 180 cases of suspected Enteroviral Meningitis have been reported in The Garden Route since 1 February 2019. Of these, 121 cases were confirmed between Mossel Bay and Knysna.

Of the 71 patients with suspected Enteroviral Meningitis treated at George Hospital, 11 cases was confirmed after laboratory tests. Mossel Bay hospital confirmed 44 cases, while Knysna Hospital confirmed a staggering 66 cases.

According to a government spokesperson for The Department Of Health, none of the cases was from a single geographical area or source. since 27 February an additional 26 cases were reported,Of these, 25 were in Mossel Bay, and one in The Hessequa Municipality.

Meningitis is usually caused by a viral infection but can also be bacterial or fungal. Vaccines can prevent some forms of meningitis. Meningitis is spread by airborne respiratory droplets (coughs or sneezes).

Symptoms include headache, fever and stiff neck. Depending on the cause, meningitis may get better on its own or it can be life-threatening, requiring urgent antibiotic treatment.

Viral meningitis is the most common type of meningitis, an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord. It is often less severe than bacterial meningitis, and most people get better on their own (without treatment).
