Several Garden Route trails closed.

A number of hiking trails in The Garden Route had to be closed on Tuesday 23 April 2019 for safety reasons due to rain over the Easter Weekend.

According to the manager of The Garden Route National Park, Megan Taplin, trails in Diepwalle and Harkerville had to be closed to protect hikers and nature lovers after rivers in the area started overflowing. The world famous Outeniqua trail is among the trails that were closed. Taplin said that they will continue to monitor the situation.

Thirty millimeters of rain fell in Diepwalle over the Easter Weekend, with a further 30mm measured the previous weekend, while Harkerville received 20.5mm of rain.

Rainfall in the Knysna estuary was measured at 47mm over a 7 day period ending on 23 April 2019.

Trails in the Tsitsikamma remain open after 40mm of rain was measured in Storms River Village over Easter weekend. Trails in The Wilderness National Park are also open and should remain open if current conditions prevail.

All routes in The Karoo National Parks have been closed due to wet conditions after 50mm of rain was measured in the Mountain View area of the park.
