Orchid show in George

It is orchid season again! So diarise to come and see a wonderful display of blooming orchids at the Presbyterian Church Hall, Caledon Street, George. The show opens on Thursday, 12 September and closes on Saturday, 14 September. This hall is just behind the George Library.

Orchid Society members will have eight individual displays, using the theme, "Galaxy of Orchids". Their landscape or other displays will be judged and the winner will receive a trophy. Stands are judged according to the interpretation of the theme and variety of orchids used.

Individual plants will also be judged by two local orchid judges, plus four learner judges. There will be a champion, a reserve champion and a class winner in each category.

Admission is R10 for adults; children under 12 years enter free. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door. The prize this year is for a blooming standard size Cymbidium with at least two spikes on it. There will be a second and third prize.

Opening times are 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday and Friday, and 09:00 to 14:00 on Saturday.

Potting demonstrations will be held on Thursday 10:30 (Cymbidiums), 15:00 (other genre), Friday 10:30 (other genre), 12:00 (Phalaenopsis) 15:00 (Cymbidiums) and Saturday at 10:30 (Cymbidiums) and 12:00 (Phalaenopsis.

These demonstrations are very popular so do come early to get a good seat. Potting mix and fertilisers will be sold at the show.
There will always be someone from the society available to give advice to members of the public.
