Man dies after drowning in Herolds Bay

With the warm weather we are experiencing in The Garden Route, beach goers are urged to take extra care when swimming in the ocean. This warning comes after a man was rescued from the surf in Victoria Bay on 7 September 2019, while another man died from drowning in Herolds Bay on 8 September 2019.

At approximately 5h50pm on Saturday 7 September 2019, NSRI Wilderness was contacted by member of public requesting urgent assistance reporting a non-fatal drowning incident at Victoria Bay and the casualty reported to be out of the water.

A former life guard, 19 year old Volker Winterbach, visiting the area from Still Bay, saw the casualty waving his arms from about 100m offshore on the eastern side of Victoria Bay. He entered the water and swam to assist the man who was caught in a rip current.

Volker, a former lifeguard at Hermanus, was able to use lifeguard skills to swim the casualty back to shore and he initiated emergency first aid on the 22 year old victim, believed to be a university student.

A Western Cape Government Health EMS Rescue technician and EMS ambulance responded to the scene along with NSRI medics. The casualty was stabilised and transported to hospital by EMS ambulance for further treatment. He is currently in a stable condition but admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further monitoring for non-fatal drowning symptoms.

Sea Rescue commend Volker Winterbach for his quick response.

On Sunday 8 September 2019, at 4pm, NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated following reports of a 32 year old male rescued from the surf by 2 off duty lifeguards who happened to be at the beach.

An NSRI medic responded together with WC Government Health EMS and on arrival on the scene paramedics joined the 2 lifeguards who were conducting CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). Sadly the man passed away.

Condolences are conveyed to family of the deceased man.

NSRI commend the 2 lifeguards, Jason Collins and Tijan van Wageningen for their efforts in trying to save the man’s life.
