Cash-in-transit suspects behind bars

Eight men will remain in custody after they were arrested on Monday 6 January 2020 for allegedly plotting a cash-in-transit robbery in George.

The eight men, David Ndamase (58), Luthando Bartman (35), Nicolas Tyali (65), Sakhekile Manga (27), Sicelo Dyani (35), Sivuyile Bathembu (37), Siyabulela Mabuya (44) and Vuyo Mjwango (43), were arrested in Thembalethu following an investigation involving the Serious Organised Crime Investigation team attached to the Hawks, and George cluster crime combating task team.

Addressing the media, Col. Katlego Mogale said the following: “The team pounced on the group that was allegedly on their way to commit a cash-in-transit robbery. They were travelling in an Isuzu bakkie that was reported stolen in Khayelitsha. The vehicle was intercepted in Qhaw Street, Thembalethu. The search that followed uncovered unlicensed firearms and ammunition, which will be subjected to forensic analysis to determine the links to other committed crimes."

The eight suspects are facing charges of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The next court appearance is scheduled for 15 January, when it is expected that the men will be applying for bail.
