Attaching a hook

Remember to send your fishing photos for publication in our Wild Fishing section to the editor at wild@wildnews.co.za. We want to see the one that did NOT get away.

The wild fishing team has received a number of requests from readers to explain different aspects of fishing. In this issue we will look at a how to tie your hook to the line to prevent that big one from swimming off with your hook due the fact that it was not tied properly.
One of the easiest ways to attach your hook is by using a method called “Silly Snell”. This method retains 80% of the line’s breaking strength, when done correctly, and is adequate for almost any fishing situation.
1. Thread the eye of the hook, and wrap line around the shank. Most important is to wrap the line away from the end of the wire which forms the eye of the hook. See fig1.
2. Begin wrapping back up the shank. See fig 2.
3. Continue back to the eye of the hook until you have a binding of approximately 1, 5 cm, and then simply tuck the tag under the last wrap. See fig 3.
4. Pull the wraps up to the eye of the hook (fig 4a), pulling the on the line to tighten the snell (fig 4b).
