Prepare for road closure.

Police and emergency services are on stand by in preparation for the possible closure of Meiringspoort between Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West.

Heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the Groot River that flows through Meiringspoort, may cause the river to be flooded.

Motorists are cautioned to find out the status of the river before commencing their journey through Meiringspoort. Motorists already en route are cautioned not to stop at picnic spots along the route, and to exit the area as quick as possible.

The N12 route through Meiringspoort crosses the Groot River no less than 25 times. Most of these river crossings are over low water bridges and flooding often occurs, resulting in the road being closed.

To find out the current status of the river motorists can contact the Beaufort West Police Station on 023 414 8800, or the De Rust Police Station on 044 241 2050.
